Some greenways were in the direct line of the flood and suffered significant damages. But other greenways faired well despite the heavy hit from the flood. Greenways for Nashville, Walk Bike Nashville, various Parks-Friends groups, and concerned citizens from neighborhoods throughout Nashville came together with our Parks Department for several clean up efforts to reopen our greenways. This Saturday (July 17), Mayor Karl Dean will celebrate the volunteerism spirit and hard work to restore our greenways.

The bike ride and walk will start on the “hill” in Shelby Park (green star on map attached) next to the Cumberland River Bike/Ped bridge. The 2-mile walk will be lead by Anne Davis and the 6-mile bike ride will be lead by Mayor Dean. Participants are encouraged to walk or ride to the event and to the start location. All bike riders are encouraged to wear helmets. Vehicle parking is available at 2 locations: Shelby Bottoms-Forrest Green Trail Head (off of Forrest Green Drive) , and Wave Country in Two Rivers Park.

WHO: Karl Dean, Mayor of Metropolitan Government of Nashville

WHAT: Celebrate Greenways post Flood of 2010

WHEN: Saturday, July 17, 2010 at 8:00 AM

Message from Jess Neely Organization:

As most of you know, the Jess Neely fields at Shelby Park were hit hard during the recent flooding. Most everything is a complete loss. We are very grateful, however, that, through the generosity of Metro Parks, we have been able to keep the season moving by playing at other facilities. Another huge thanks to Metro Parks for all their hard work in helping to get the Jess Neely facilities back open. There is still much work to be done, but we are finally at a point where we can request aid from our wonderful neighbors. We are requesting anyone who can help to come to the park (the ball fields closest to the Bottoms entrance – by the train trestle) from 9am until 3pm on Saturday, May 29th.

A link to the event (with full details) is below.

The following information/feedback was received by the FOS Executive Committee earlier today:

“The Shelby Park damage is being included in the damage assessment being provided to FEMA and whatever insurance recovery funds that will be available.

We are getting 10 volunteers from AmeriCorps who are going to be given the assignment to start clean up on the greenway, but that is going to be difficult as the ground may still be saturated.

Volunteers to help (with any cleanup days organized and approved by Metro Parks) would be greatly appreciated, and like with the initial volunteers, we would prefer them to be registered with Hands on Nashville.

We are going to be using equipment, today (Thursday, May 13th), to scrape the mud and silt off the greenway, and could use assistance at the bridges that are still there in moving and piling trash and debri (cleanup date to be confirmed and provided later).

If the volunteeers go to the ball fields (to assist with the cleanup day being organized by the Old Timers Baseball Organization on Saturday, May 15th at 10:00 a.m. — see post below), we request that the wood products be separated from the other trash you collect. Our staff will pick up everything.”

Greenways Temporarily Closed Due To Flooding

For safety reasons, Metro Parks closed Greenways on Monday pending a safety assessment after last weekend’s flooding. Some greenways sustained significant damage to bridges, boardwalks and barriers. Some sections of trail are impassable, and Metro Parks has deemed it in the best interest and safety of users to close the trails system until further notice.

Please refrain from using the Greenways until they are re-opened and please don’t attempt to climb or otherwise circumvent gates or other barriers.

As is customary for the ‘Volunteer State’, several have contacted us wanting to support a clean up effort. There is a cleanup currently being organized by the Richland Creek TrailWatch group. There will be much to clean-up at most of the greenways.

Individuals or groups wishing to organize clean-up efforts please contact the greenways office. After the assessments are complete, Metro Parks and Greenways for Nashville will coordinate with volunteer groups to begin the clean-up process. While the Metro Parks department does a fine job of keeping our trails maintained, they may appreciate the extra help during this unusually laborious period.

The results of the flooding on our greenways system is disappointing. With patience and work we will overcome this historic event.

Health, safety and strength to you and yours,
Greenways for Nashville

Dear Friends:

The devasting flood waters on May 1st and 2nd left our precious park buried under unimaginable depths of water. While the focus of the community is and should be the people and personal properties affected by this horrific event, in the coming months we will begin to organize efforts to restore our park to suitable conditions.

We have shared many photos of the flooding of the park on our Facebook Group Page. Please feel free to share your photos and comments about the flooding in our park and stay tuned for updates on how you can assist in the restoration efforts.

The following message was sent earlier to Metro Parks by our President, Carol Williams:

“When the water recedes in Shelby Park and Bottoms, please guide FOS as to what you need from us. Many people already want to help. We are so sad to see our beloved park flooded but are hopeful that you will keep your eye out for available Federal Funds to assist in recovery.

We are ready and willing to organize as soon as we hear from you.

Thanks to everyone who has volunteered to assist in this effort.”
