Volunteering

The Great Shelby Park Pickup!

You see the trash in the park. Now, join your neighbors and Friends of Shelby as we pick up park-wide on Saturday, December 12. There are shifts at 8:30 and 9:00 AM to ensure proper distancing. This is a great opportunity to introduce the little ones to volunteer work!

Thank You Troop 103

The ducks of Sevier Lake are part of what make Shelby so special, and scout troop 103 wants you to know how to keep our winged friends healthy while feeding them. With guidance from the Shelby Bottoms Nature Center, the scouts were recently in the park educating fellow park users on the do's and don’ts of feeding the Mallards, Canadian Geese, and American Black Duck.

Do feed:

- Frozen peas

- Small pieces of lettuce

- Cut up grapes

- Any type of birdseed

- Cracked corn

Don’t feed:

- Bread of any kind

- Popcorn

- Chocolate

- Onions or garlic

- Avocados

- Any type of citrus fruit

Feeding ducks and geese can cause:

- Malnutrition that leads to disease

- Territorial disputes

- Pollution

- Aggressive behaviors towards humans
