Volunteer with Friends of Shelby

Volunteers are an integral part of achieving our mission to preserve, protect and enhance Shelby Park and Bottoms.  The Friends of Shelby could not make an impact in the park without the volunteerism of individuals and groups that give back to the park each year.  Volunteers impact the park by performing a number of activities including planting, landscaping, pruning, maintaining footpaths, clearing brush as well as assisting with fundraising, special events and administrative tasks.

Check out all the ways to get involved.

Monthly Volunteer Program

Every month, we schedule public opportunities for the community to help care for Shelby Park and Bottoms. Projects are generally open to anyone over 12 years of age and offer a variety of opportunities to fit many capabilities.

Current Projects

Cave Spring

We have partnered with the Cumberland River Compact to remove old, deteriorating concrete around the cave, create a natural channel for the spring, and plant a rain garden to help absorb stormwater.

Thank you to the volunteers who helped Saturday and Sunday, September 19 and 20 getting the pieces of concrete out of the cave spring area and to the parking lot to be hauled off. There are morning and afternoon shifts each day. All shifts will be rewarded with pizza and the satisfaction of helping in the park!

In October we will bring volunteers back to the site to begin planting and mulching the rain garden, and we'll send out a new sign up as we approach that day.

Signup coming soon.

Vinny Links Cleanup

Does this COVID life have your schedule a bit more flexible? Have you been enjoying the socially distant sport of golf this summer? Then come help out on Thursday, September 24 as Friends of Shelby teams up with First Tee of Tennessee to work on landscaping and trash clean up around the Vinny Links Golf Course. Shifts begin at 9 am. Participants working at least two hours will get a free round of golf or a free bucket of balls for the driving range!

Community Group Volunteer Program

Friends of Shelby loves to work with groups. Whether it's your ten-person office or your 100 person church, we can find a project that suits you. Friends of Shelby helps coordinate the project and provides tools, gloves, and work project assignments to match the size and capabilities of any volunteer group.  Each volunteer day begins with an orientation including the goals of the park improvement effort, tool training, and general safety rules.

If you are interested in a project for your group, please contact us. info@friendsofshelby.org
