Volunteer with Friends of Shelby

Volunteers are an integral part of achieving our mission to preserve, protect and enhance Shelby Park and Bottoms.  The Friends of Shelby could not make an impact in the park without the volunteerism of individuals and groups that give back to the park each year.  Volunteers impact the park by performing a number of activities including planting, landscaping, pruning, maintaining footpaths, clearing brush as well as assisting with fundraising, special events, and administrative tasks.

Monthly Volunteer Program

Every month, we schedule public opportunities for the community to help care for Shelby Park and Bottoms. Projects are generally open to anyone over 12 years of age and offer a variety of opportunities to fit many capabilities.

April 2021

Friends of Shelby is bringing #trashtag back to Shelby Park and Bottoms for a one-day, park-wide cleanup.

If you're looking for a way to give back to the park, and want to make a difference in your community, then join Friends of Shelby on Saturday, April 24 to pick up trash anywhere in the park.

With weeks of heavy rains and continued high use of the park, trash is a problem that needs all hands on deck! Whether you have 15 minutes or two hours, every bit counts.

This is primarily a work-on-your-own opportunity. Friends of Shelby will be handing out trash bags and gloves at Lakeview Shelter #2 from 9 am to noon. Come by to grab your supplies and head out to your favorite part of the park or let us show you a spot that needs help. You can also bring your own bag and pick up anywhere you like.

Tag us @friendsofshelby with your #trashtag picture. We'll feature park helpers throughout the day and one lucky person will win a Friends of Shelby goodie bag with a few surprises.

Work on Your Own Time

Do you have a flexible schedule that allows you to work in the park on your own time? Do you have a special skill or interest to bring to the park? Contact us and we can find a project to fit your availability.

Community Group Volunteer Program

Friends of Shelby loves to work with groups. Whether it's your ten-person office or your 100 person church, we can find a project that suits you. Friends of Shelby helps coordinate the project and provides tools, gloves, and work project assignments to match the size and capabilities of any volunteer group.  Each volunteer day begins with an orientation including the goals of the park improvement effort, tool training, and general safety rules.

If you are interested in a project for your group, please contact us. [email protected]

Thank you to our community partners. We could not do this great work without your help
